Let's celebrate!

To mark our 5th Anniversary year, we will be diving into Joni Mitchell’s iconic Big Yellow Taxi for our 40th project, a song with a timeless message about appreciating what we have before it’s gone.

About The Project

2025 marks five incredible years of the Stay At Home Choir. That’s 40 projects, thousands of singers, and countless moments of musical joy shared across the world.

It all started as a way to keep people singing in uncertain times, but it has grown into something much bigger—a choir from all around the world, united through music.

As we celebrate this milestone, we want to say THANK YOU.

Thank you for singing with us, for showing up with passion and enthusiasm, and for proving that no matter where we are in the world, music will always bring us together.
And what better way to mark the occasion than with a song that’s all about cherishing what matters before it’s gone.
This is an image of composer Bob Chilcott holding a pile of vocal scores on a patchwork background of green, blues and purples.

About Big Yellow Taxi

Joni Mitchell’s Big Yellow Taxi is one of the most recognisable songs of all time, written in response to environmental destruction, “They paved paradise to put up a parking lot”.

The song captures the moment when industrialisation and urbanisation began rapidly altering landscapes, making it a timeless call to appreciate and protect the world around us. The reference to a tree museum points to the reality of natural spaces being confined and commodified, a message that remains as relevant today as when the song was first released.

But Big Yellow Taxi isn’t just about environmental change—it also strikes a deeply personal note. In its final verse, the lyrics shift from global concerns to the intimate heartbreak of loss, as the singer watches a loved one depart in the song’s eponymous taxi. This duality—between the vast and the personal, the political and the emotional—makes Big Yellow Taxi a truly special piece of music history and very poignant for our times.
